About the Role

We are seeking a talented and passionate graduate student to join the biology team at HICOMP as a Research Intern. The ideal candidate will be driven by the desire to advance precision medicine through cutting-edge Organ-on-Chip (OoC) and microfluidic technologies. In this role, you will work in a beautiful, all-window workspace with abundant natural light at our Sorrento Valley lab, collaborating with a world-class microfluidics device team. Under the direct mentorship of our Harvard- and MIT-trained scientists, you will gain invaluable hands-on experience, with the exciting opportunity to transition into a full-time role upon graduation.

Requirements
  1. Cell Culture & Experimentation:

  • Perform routine mammalian cell culture, maintenance, and characterization with strict adherence to aseptic techniques.

  • Assist in the development, optimization, and execution of biological assays using our proprietary Organ-on-a-Chip platforms.

  • Prepare biological samples and reagents required for microfluidic device testing.


  1. Research & Collaboration:

  • Collaborate closely with our cross-functional team of engineers and biologists to evaluate and optimize the performance of microfluidic biochips.

  • Document experimental procedures, accurately analyze data, and present findings during team meetings.

  • Contribute to literature reviews and stay updated on the latest advancements in microphysiological modeling and precision medicine.


  1. Laboratory Operations:

  • Support daily laboratory operations, ensuring a clean, organized, and safe working environment.

  • Maintain equipment and manage inventory for cell culture supplies and biological reagents.

Requirements:


  1. Education and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled as a graduate student (Master’s or Ph.D. program) in Biology, Bioengineering, Cell Biology, or a related scientific discipline.

  • Proven hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture is strictly required.


  1. Skills:

  • Proficiency in basic biological laboratory techniques and sterile operations.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex experimental data.

  • Basic understanding of microfluidics or Organ-on-a-Chip (OoC) principles.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and data analysis software.

  • Experience with immunostaining, fluorescence microscopy, or molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, Western Blot).

  • Previous exposure to handling biochips or microphysiological systems.
